BBC Spy Drama SPOOKS Returns – MI5 Not 9 to 5
Consistently hailed as a benchmark for modern drama, compelling spy series Spooks is set to return in late 2009, the BBC has announced.
The hit drama from Kudos Film and Television has been recommissioned for an eighth series while it currently enjoys its most critically acclaimed series ever.
“So topical it could have been filmed this morning…” Daily Mail Weekend
This series witnessed the arrival of Robin Hood star Richard Armitage as Lucas North, the return of Hermione Norris as Ros Myers, the shattering discovery of Connie James as the MI5 mole and the shocking murder of Ben Kaplan by one of his own.
The highly topical series continues to secure strong ratings, regularly attracting over 5.7 million viewers on BBC One and BBC Three, and has received a deluge of positive feedback from both fans and the press.
Details of the new series are being kept under wraps but Simon Crawford Collins, Executive Producer and Joint Managing Director at Kudos, promises there will be even more compelling storylines and high drama in series eight:
“Spooks is currently enjoying an exceptional run on BBC One and BBC Three and viewers will be shocked when this series ends with a sting in its tale.
“As for next year…we’re currently working with our fantastic team of writers to predict the big stories for 2009 to keep Spooks’ prescience in these dramatically changing times.”
Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, who commissioned the eighth series, continues: “I’m delighted Spooks is returning to BBC One and BBC Three next year. Spooks continues to be a channel defining show, consistently pushing the boundaries of television drama while maintaining strong viewer loyalty and attracting critical acclaim.
“I can’t wait for series eight to burst onto our screens in 2009.”
Richard Armitage, who joined at the beginning of the last series, says: “I’m thrilled with the response we’ve had to this series and I can’t wait to find out what the next series has in store.
“If the climatic episodes at the end of series seven are anything to go by, I think series eight will be spectacular. I am excited about taking Lucas into deeper and more dangerous territory, and seeing if he can survive!”
Hermione Norris, who is approaching her fourth series of Spooks as Ros Myers, adds: “Spooks is a fantastic show to be a part of and I’m delighted to be joining the team again next year.”
Filming on series eight is believed to begin in March 2009 (to be confirmed) and Spooks will return to BBC One in late 2009 – One Nation Magazine can’t wait!

I live in Hawaii and love Spooks/ MI-5 as we see in America. Our family are waiting patiently for series 7 to be released for American audiences. We love this programming and hope it continues. It is a wonderful drama series that is addicting and please continue the series as long as the ratings are good. Please release series 7 for us to view!
We are waiting!!!
Love MI-5 a.k.a. Spooks. I live in the U.S. and we see old episodes on public television. MI-5 beats out some of the better American tv shows and keeps me glued to the tv screen. Keep up the great work! Rupert Penry Jones and Razza Jaffrey are my favorites!
Enjoyed every series of Spooks so far. Anxiously awaiting the next series. Wondering what happened to Harry now. Its all go in Thames House. Miss Adam though. Ros’ character is brilliant and sometimes really got under my skin in previous episodes but comes through in the end. Come on with the next series.
Controversial, intense, relevant, provoking…Nothing like it here in Canada. The filming is awesome, the music, tense. I’m on the edge of my seat for the entire show. I can’t believe the writing. You lead me on! Finally, tv worth watching.
Loved the series so far, the last episode was a real cliff hanger.
My hat goes off to the production team, you’ve made a realistic, believable show that could go on for years and rival The Bill for longevity.
Keep up the good work folks, we all love it.
I just finished watching the first 6 series of Spooks. I believe it is not only the best spy drama I have ever seen, but the best program, period. Better than the Sopranos! We should have more smart TV!

Hi, I live in Italy, came to know about Spooks 3 years ago when my brother who lives in Australia wrote to me one day about it, full of praise, too. This is w’hen my chase after Spooks started, I kept on downloading the show fromt the net, week after week, year after year and now we are approaching the eighth series. What wonderful moments Spooks has given me, and now with Lucas played by Richard Armitage (very sorry to see ‘Adam’ die, must admit), I can hardly wait …..
I am catching up with the programs and am wondering why the original cast,Tom, Zoe and Dan were written off the great show?
I’m a South African spooks fan and cannot wait to see series 8 in South Africa or on DVD!! Series 7 was mindblowing, gripping, awesome, sad, WOW, and I am going to miss “Adam Carter”…that’s for sure!!
It’s now 2010, and now want another series of Spooks!!!!!!!! Please tell me there will be another one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am addicted.
I cant wait for Sat night to watch MI5. But cant you please bring back Adam Carter for me he was MI5.
I am a Brit living in Canada and am indeed totally addicted to MI-5, constantly convincing friends to say yes, it’s worth staying up late to experience such a brilliantly dialogued and produced spy thriller. The best TV series ever in every respect – relevant and convincingly realistic, sadly meaning the good guys must die as well as the bad. Don’t stop and roll-on Ruth’s return!
My husband and I started watching MI5 on PBS as a default choice. First, I got hooked on Tom, then Adam. I still miss Adam. We check our weekly listing on Sunday and when we see MI5 scheduled for the following Sat night, we both practically whoop!!!!! I am so hooked on this program that I think about it for days after seeing an episode. PBS PLEASE keep this series running! PS: Did I mention I still miss Adam? Adam and Roz, could it get much better?
I think I may actually consider suicide if the BBC ends this most excellent show. I feel like I’ve spent the last decade futilely fighting the real terrorists in my head, full of impotent rage, but when I watch Spooks I feel somehow better — mourning Danny & Adam as if they were real soldiers — castigating myself for it because they’re not really, and being reminded of the true, awful toll. Please, please keep it going..
I really have enjoyed MI5, we really don’t have any shows like this in America like MI5, an attack on goverment and the work they do to stop it is clever and exciting.
I live in Canada and MI5 comes on here on a Sunday, that show I will not miss for anything, love the actors they are just great even more so no swearing in it, one can take some now and them but in this show there is nothing when watching Canadian and American police shows there is always swearing in it. Please keep that show going to be honest I love all English shows don’t miss any when on here. I do hope to be able to purchase MI5 dvd`s one day – keep up the good work with the British shows!
Just read everyone else comment ,yes I agree if the show cant be aired that night, I’m irritable! Please don’t let anymore of these actors go off, it makes one sad as they are all so good.
Spooks…British Television at its Best!
Believable…Compelling…Well Done Kudos and BBC.
I live in Canada and watch MI5 great series. One Question “Why kill off Adam?”, definitely the star of the show, not sure now if I will continue to watch, all the other actors are good but do not come across with the same appeal as Adam. Too bad as he was great to watch.
I live in Canada and watch the Mi5 series great show. One question “why kill off Adam” he was definitely the star of the show, the other actors are good but dont come over with the sam appeal as Adam.
Too bad will miss him as he was great to watch.
Hi, can`t wait for Spooks to return to our screens, my favourite actor is Richard Armitage, and he`s brill in spooks, so please bbc keep up the good work!
This show will never work without Adam. More importantly without Rupert Penry-Jones. I haven’t missed an episode which I can’t say about any other TV program of any kind. I’m just not a TV person more of a film buff. But without Rupert Penry-Jones — I don’t think I’ll be interested. He, and he relationship everyone had with him really made it.
So much for typing in the dark.
I’ve been a fan of “24″ but that show ended this year. I happened upon “Spooks” last year on PBS. It was in the middle of some season, no idea about the show’s hx, but I kept watching. I love the edge-of-my-seat feel, much better than “24″ WHY? Mainly because people work as a team. Jack Bauer couldn’t do it all, and I was tired on the one-person-as-hero concept. Anyway, I LOVE ‘SPOOKS!!!” Love it, love it, love it. I’m spending the summer getting caught up on Seasons 1-9. Guess I’ve been a big fan of spy shows for a while and have been waiting for years for a great one to come along. THANKS BBC!
Love love love Spooks.
we just saw the last epsiode of series 9 tonight. we cannot wait for series 10. it is absolutely the best program. hopefully ruth accepts harry’s prosposal.
This is the best series I’ve seen. I just have not been able to watch them in order so am somewhat confused about what happens when. I watch it on PBS but would love to have the entire series for my own.
