English National Ballet with just a little bit of Scots
The English National Ballet, which comes to the Theatre Royal on March 17 as part of its 60 anniversary celebrations, is proving to be a bit a homecoming for one of its dancers.
Grant Rae, who originates from Paisley, trained in Paisley at Shuffles under Elma White from the age of six until 10 years old. From the age of 11 until Grant was 16 his full time vocational training was at Dance School, Scotland before further training at English National Ballet School. During his time at Dance School, Scotland Grant appeared with Scottish Ballet gaining invaluable performance experience with his peers. Upon graduation from English National Ballet School Grant was accepted into English National Ballet as an Artist of the Company in 2005.
Grant Rae says: “Appearing in Giselle at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow will be a personal treat for me and brings back so many happy memories of when I was a student watching Scottish Ballet, never thinking I would be appear on that stage as a professional too. It also gives my relatives a chance to see me performing live since my Gran has yet to see me perform on stage, so I can’t wait for her, my aunties, uncles and cousins to come along!”
Next month Grant will perform at the Theatre Royal in Giselle haunting tale of a peasant girl’s innocent love for the handsome Duke Albrecht and her subsequent betrayal, which casts the characters into the realm of madness and the supernatural. First performed in Paris in 1841 Giselle has become synonymous with the Romantic movement of the day and is often described as the ultimate Romantic ballet. This year Giselle is the jewel in the crown during the company’s diamond jubilee.
The ballet adds an exhilarating twist to the National Tour, offering inspirational new work across the UK at a price everyone can afford.
