This May Brazilian industrial designer Flavlo Deslandes launched his first collection of hand-built bicycles.

Good for you – good for everybody

The bicycle frame is built with bamboo. By biking bamboo you are reducing your carbon footprint and contributing to a “healthier” world. But you are not only making a statement, you’re also improving your ride comfort thanks to bamboo’s flexible yet rigid capabilities.

The bamboo used in Deslande’s bicycles is hand picked in Brazil and carefully selected for this particular use. It is dried and surface treated so it can last long. As a result of the unique structure of the material special tools and techniques are used in the manufacture of the bicycle.

A unique material

From ancient times man has used Bamboo for construction of houses, furniture, fences, mats as well as objects of decorative and personal use – and also as a source of food. Bamboo is attracting more and more interest of researches that are revealing new and important uses from bamboo.

Flavio says: “Bamboo is nature’s own organic tube structure. I have always believed that this fine material has a great potential. The challenge to make it work has kept me going. My motivation was always the opportunity to connect modern design with natural materials. The idea to make this connection in a bicycle is logical if you think about it: Biking is a very energy effective way of transportation. And combining a sustainable material as bamboo with energy free mobility feels quite right.”

I am a bicycle racer. Started racing in 1976. I have earned two state champonship metals. One in 1989 as a 3000 meter pursuiter and one in 1998 as a 2000 meter pursuiter. In 2003 the Nationals were held in Kenosha Wisconsin, 30 miles from my home. I placed 12th in the 2000 meter event and 12th in the 500 meter event. I have done this with my money and time. I have built custom frames for RRB Cycles and Dennis Kilfoy Cycles with Chromoly tubes. I read your Blog on the internet. I am ready to build my own Custom Pursuit Frame with Bamboo tubes. Will you send me a complete tubeset of Bamboo tubes. Thank You Harley Miller.
