One Nation Magazine discovers a lot more to Mr Gay UK Daniel Broughton
Want to land a Mr Gay UK? Well Daniel Broughton partner used the chat up line ‘You ok Scruff’, and they have been together ever since!
Daniel tell us a little about yourself?
Well, being a small town lad there’s not a lot people don’t know about me in Blackpool… Or so they think… I’m really quite a private person and very family orientated, and this is one of those questions where I’m unsure where to start. Hopefully, you will get to know a little about me through this interview.
Describe your self in 5 words?
Ambitious – Lucky – Grounded – Protective – Loving
Looking back at winning the 2007 Mr Gay UK competition how did that feel and what made you enter?
I always wanted to enter, but I wasn’t confident enough. I used to stand at past finals and watch the winners take the crown, then go on to do amazing things. I used to say to myself, ‘ I want to do that’. Then in January 2007, I started training for the competitions Blackpool Heat, but I never thought I’d go through with it. A few JD’s and a lot of muscle ache and pains, I won, and then went on to win the Title in September that year. It was the best feeling ever! It’s not just about all photo shoots and the Title, it taught me loads about myself.
Your body is incredible how committed to fitness do you have to be in your line of work, and how open about your body do you have to be?
This is going to sound quite bizarre, but to be honest I’m really rubbish at the gym. The training I did for Mr. Gay UK was done from my apartment at the time, with some cheap dumbbells from Argos I bought specially, and to date I still have the same dumbbells doing me proud. I believe in keeping fit for the good of your health, I’m no body builder, but love to keep motivated and active; this seems to help a lot.
Do people you meet make certain assumptions about you being a previous winner of Mr Gay UK?
Yes, defiantly, some positive and negative. The one thing that bothers me and some previous winners, is that we find that people find us hard to approach; when I approach them or our paths do cross they tell me things like ‘I thought you’d look down at me’, or ‘thought you’d be stuck up’ etc. I simply reply every time, ‘No body is better than you, regardless you who they are or who they may think they are.
If you had the choice of being a film star or supermodel which would you pick?
This could be seen as quite controversial, but I’m going for it anyway. Katie Price. The reason for this is from a business and brand point of view. She is one clever women, and highly successful.
If you could be the face of any designer underwear/sports brand which would it be?
I have done a lot with Aussie Bum, working with the likes of David Beckham and Kate Moss, for charity events such as the Albert Kennedy Trust. However, I would love to do something as simple as Calvin Klein, as these models are the most prestigious of all male models.
You seem very confident in your photo-shoots – How risqué would you actually go in a shoot?
I believe that you need to let the viewer wanting more, and let them use their imagination a little. As they say once you have seen one, you have seen them all. Though some have been taken by error which are a little risqué; they’re under lock and key as far as I know.
You have done some amazing photo-shoots. What has been the best shoot location?
Some locations have been amazing; the one that stands out the most is Tangier – Morocco. This was my first official shoot as Mr. Gay UK; it was the excitement of it all, and the not knowing what to really expect which I think gave the shoot the edge.
Reality Model shows, what’s your feeling? Love them or hate them? And would you do it?
I don’t think people realise that the process in Reality shows like ‘America Next Top Model’ is exactly the same, but the difference is that it’s just filmed for TV viewing. Obviously, it is a little dolled up, but if these shows give people the opportunity to do something they have been dreaming of then I see no harm in it.
What do you think is the sexiest part of your body, and do you show people often?
I love my ‘V’ lines and the only thing I don’t have to work on luckily. For those who do know what they are, they are the two inverted diagonal lines in front of your hips that define your outer belly or 6 pack.
What’s the biggest thing that embarrasses you?
When I’m out in a bar or night club, usually there will be one guy or girl that picks up a magazine or the new 2010 calendar, running over towards my shooting are you Daniel Broughton. I don’t know why, but I get so embarrassed, because everyone starts staring.
What has been your biggest achievement this year and what are you looking to conquer in 2010?
I wish I could tell you. I can’t go into to much detail or I could be hung, drawn and quartered, but I have been working on a project this year, and it’s been a life long dream. I’m really excited about it and it is sure to be common knowledge by late summer. So fingers crossed.
You are 24, what do you what to achieve by the time you are 34?
I love to own an Aston Martin. I know it’s not much of an achievement for some, but you would of thought I was even more boring if I went on and on about my career. I will know I have made it when that car is on my drive.
Our readers are going to want to know are you single or attached, and how does it feel being adorned by so many gay fans?
When touring with Mr. Gay UK I was deprived of a boyfriend due to a busy schedule, and me being me wanted just to focus on the task in hand. However, only January this year I have found him, well he found me to be honest, the first words he said to me were ‘You ok Scruff’, and been with him ever since. With regards to the fans, they make me feel so proud. I found it all crazy when we got emails from people in the U.S, China, or even as unlikely as Iraq, asking for calendars and signed merchandise. I just hope I can keep as many happy as I can. Thank you guys.
Tell us something people would never guess about you that you have never told anyone before?
Now this can be difficult, hmmm…. I would like to have children one day. I don’t have a clue how its going to happen, but I would like my own. There’s are lots to think about, and its pretty scary, but it scares me to think I may never be a Dad.
What’s your ideal night out or in and with who?
An ideal night can consist of staying in or going out for me, but I do look forward to a night in with a dominoes, DVD and the fella, knowing there’s no work the next day. The DVD would have to be a horror movie. Bliss.
Oh wise one… If you could give ‘all us guys’ one piece of advice on any subject what would it be?
I’m still learning everyday myself, and I’m always seeking advice from my family and friends. All I will say to everyone is something that my mum always says to me, its as simple as ‘just be true to yourself and aim high’.

I feel inspired that you only used cheap dumbbells from Argos to start you off. I feel really embarrassed going to the gym – all them buffed lads, rather depressing so i’m gunna give your way a go!
