One Nation Magazine Looks At Martin Ballendat’s Multi Award-Winning Shells

Martin Ballendat’s multi award-winnin Shells is available as a lounge and arm chair.

The design shows friendly flowing, organic lines which are accentuated by the use of a soft, flexible knitted fabric for the chair’s back and arm support. This innovative material shows a varying density within its knitted structure, with an integrated band providing support to the design’s strong sculptural form. Its airy character makes the chair seem light and transparent – it also guarantees a wonderfully comfortable back support.

The metal base frame – three different types are available – gives the entire design a sharp and highly contemporary feel. The slightly higher armchair serves very well around any table; the lower and wider lounge chair can be used equally well solitair or in relaxing groups. All chairs use swivel mechanisms with memory return – depending on the model in either 180° or 360° – which is protected by a PVC underseat.

Shells won the 2002 Internationaler Designpreis Baden-Württemberg, the 2004 Red Dot Design Award and the Good Design Award.
