St Petersburg when the budget can stretch a bit further

Situated on Malaya Morskaya, just a stone’s throw from St Isaac’s Cathedral and the Winter Palace, the Petro Palace Hotel was truly amazing. Spotlessly clean, roomy, and furnished to the very highest standards of luxury, it blew our expectations completely out of the water. This commitment to an outstanding guest experience extended to the staff, who genuinely couldn’t do enough to look after us.

The hotel’s Baron Restaurant, situated just below street level, was similarly magnificent, with an extensive menu of Russian cuisine delighting the eye and the palate in equal measure. Having already heard that Moscow was the world’s most expensive city, we were prepared for St Petersburg not being so far behind; with a meal for two and a bottle of red heading towards £100, we weren’t so far off the mark. Taken in the context of this magnificent city, though, you can’t complain. Besides, what’s American Express for?

One of the real highlights of the Petro Palace came on the way to our sumptuous seventh floor room: just next to the lift we found the Sky Bar, whose fusion of sleek design and relaxed ambience was available until the early hours of each morning. The vast window afforded stunning views of the city skyline, with the Cathedral and Hermitage both clearly visible. Bar stools in the window allowed us to savour the view with a glass of something typically Russian, while the main bar area boasted comfortable sofas which lent themselves perfectly to more intimate socialising.

Sure, it’s not the cheapest hotel in the city, but its heady combination of Imperial grandeur, chic modern design and flawless service makes the Petro Palace a perfect base for a trip to St Petersburg.
