Photographer The Irish Wolf
A amazing and refreshing photographer that caught our eye this Summer.
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Rolf. Photography changed from being a hobby to being my job just over 2 years ago. I mostly shoot guys in urban/industrial settings. I’m also a photographer for Boyz magazine, shooting at clubs and bars for their scene coverage.
How did you get into photography?
By getting the lend of a friend’s camera and deciding to take photos at Pride one year. Seeing I could have a good rapport with people I’d just met made me decide to take it further. So I started walking around London, asking scaffolders, builders and cute guys off the street to let me shoot them. I was very quickly hooked!
Are you a self taught photographer or did you have a mentor that showed you the ropes?
Self taught.
What sort of equipment and software do you use?
Canon DSLR and Photoshop CS3.
Who would be the person you would most love to shoot?
Andrew Flintoff, Philip Olivier, Michael Ballack, Alan Smith, Kelvin Fletcher…to name a few.
What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures?
Personally I try to keep that to a minimum. But in general I say go for it, you may pass the point where the image changes from being a photograph into being simply a work of art, but why put restrictions on yourself?
Black & White or Colour photography?
I used to be a Black/White film purist but the dawn of digital photography shook me free of that.
Where is your favorite location to take pictures in your studio or location? and how do you decide on locations & subjects?
Definitely location. I’m always scouting London for new places to shoot. My first love is using gritty industrial locations, which are becoming harder and harder to find in London. I choose my models based on what reaction they cause in me..its purely personal and totally subjective.
Where is the most spectacular place you’ve ever been?
I’m mostly in broken down factories and warehouses, but I shot a couple of times in a huge disused power station – that was memorable. And a beautifully decrepit mill in Yorkshire that I managed to find a way into.
What would you say to other enthusiast photographers out there who aspires to what you’ve achieved?
Pick up the camera and stuck in. Get a website or webpage as soon as you can and display your work. And don’t forget your relationship with your model is very important so make sure you work at getting them relaxed.
Whom do you look up to in the photographic world?
I tend to admire individual images as I find them rather than follow the careers of specific photographers.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Acting would be fun I bet.
What is the ONE lasting impression you want to leave with your photos?
Definitely desire.
