Rick Day – PLAYERS
The first photo book from Rick Day is PLAYERS and like his models Rick Day loves to play with the expectations of the contemplator.
Superficially it’s all about sports, about immaculate and trained bodies in chunky rugby wear, tight trunks or simply naked. But Rick Day is not just taking pictures of masculine sex appeal. His work impresses with an almost corporeal tension. An interaction of straightforwardness and intimacy keeps on questioning: Who is the subject and who is the object?
Rick Day’s photographs are perfectly staged. He abstains from dispensable settings and adopts colours very carefully. He sets a course only with sweaty sportswear and with lighting that seems to aim for direct confrontation with his models.
Day’s men do use this free space offered by their photographer. Sober and superior they act out their exhibitionism, almost devouring the contemplator but still with a strictly signalized distance.
Born in the South, Rick Day taught himself how to use the camera. After moving to New York City in 1994 he soon became a well-respected fashion photographer. Many magazines (Elle, Details, GQ amongst) hired his good eye. He worked as chief- photographer for renowned “Genre” magazine and shots ad campaigns for Gap, Ritaini and Rufskin.
