Let’s do the Time Warp again… with Michael Aspel
Richard O’Brien’s outrageous classic The Rocky Horror Show is back and ready to thrill you with its frothy fun and naughty moments, at the New Victoria TheatreWednesday 1 – Saturday 4 September.
With the legendary TV personality and presenter Michael Aspel, OBE, as the narrator and Olivier Award winner David Bedella, as the celebrated and scandalous, Frank’n’Furter.
Michael, best known for the presenting This is Your Life and Antique’s Roadshow is no stranger to the role, performing on previous tours and is also no stranger to the New Victoria Theatre stage when he starred in last year’s pantomime, Cinderella, as Baron Hardup. He’ll be donning the smoking jacket and looking forward to witty banter with the Woking audience not to mention guiding them through the steps of the classic Time Warp.
This irresistible riot of a stage musical has seduced audiences all over the world for more than thirty years and its cult status guarantees it’s in every die-hard Rocky fan’s diary and a definite must see for every theatre lover who likes their musicals full of fun, frolics and frivolity.
The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of engaged sweethearts Brad and Janet who are forced to seek refuge in a castle one dark and stormy night. Unbeknown to them the castle is home to Frank ‘n’ Furter, a mad, bad and very sexy transvestite from Transylvania and his group of party loving misfits including the rippling muscle bound Rocky and the vivacious Magenta. Featuring the timeless classics Sweet Transvestite, Damn It Janet and The Time Warp, The Rocky Horror Show is one wildly exuberant party and, with audiences delighting in dressing up for the show and joining in with rowdy glee throughout, it’s an exhilarating experience not to be missed.
Written by the legendary Richard O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Show premiered at the Royal Court Theatre on 19 June 1973 where it proved to be an instant success and in 1975 was made into the timeless cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with O’Brien starring as Riff Raff and Tim Curry as Frank‘n’Furter. Since its premiere the stage show has been in almost continuous production throughout the world and the cinematic version is one of the best known, loved and most ardently followed films of all time.
David Bedella, best known for creating the roles of Satan/Warm Up Man in Jerry Springer – The Opera, for which he won Best Musical Actor in 2004, plays the outrageous scientist Frank‘n’Furter. Bedella is well known as Doctor Carlos Fashola from BBC1’s popular hospital drama Holby City and starred in numerous Broadway and US national tours including Jesus Christ Superstar, La Cage Aux Folles, Almost Like Being in Love, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, West Side Story, and A Chorus Line, for which he received a Best Actor in a Musical. He has also played Frank‘n’Furter alongside Meat Loaf in a previous production of The Rocky Horror Show.
Dressing up is all part of the fun and is certainly encouraged (the ladies are welcome to join the men in donning stilettos and corsets) but it’s not essential and everyone, whatever they are wearing will have tremendous fun and feel part of the action. It’s an evening to enjoy, revel in some madcap capers and sing along to all those fabulous songs. Everything you need to know about the show can be found at www.rockyhorror.co.uk and audiences do need to be prepared for a few rude bits!
Opening night is awaited with much An-Ti-Ci————————–Pation!
