America’s Next Top Model Series 12

This week, the premiere of series 12 of phenomenally popular US modelling contest America’s Next Top Model sees host Tyra Banks take on a new persona – the “goddess of fierce” – and proclaim she’s in the market for a successor.

34 finalists arrive at Caesar’s Palace – this week dubbed the “Temple of Tyra” – in Las Vegas to compete for the gig and prove they have what it takes to wear Tyra’s crown as America’s Next Top Model.

Through a camp wall of Spartan soldiers emerge “the Jays”, photo shoot art director Jay Manuel and runway coach J. Alexander, who instruct the ladies to don some tiny togas and lace-up sandals for their first Roman-themed photoshoot.

Small town girls, a self proclaimed African queen, a country bumpkin, a street preacher, a proud conspiracy theorist and several girls who have survived personal tragedy are all keen to transform themselves into top models, but only 13 will get the chance to move into the model loft in New York City.

After showing off their catwalk skills, or lack thereof, and chatting with the panel, the girls get to know each other back at the hotel, but no sooner have they been introduced than the claws come out and the tears start to flow. Then the girls find that following an initial cut, only 21 of them will move on to one final photoshoot in which they will each portray a different goddess. Even at this critical moment, the girls can’t keep it civil and a fight breaks out on set between two strong personalities. Will the dust-up cost two contestants the chance to return with Tyra to New York when the judges make the last cut and choose the 13 finalists?
