The company has its own roots in 1986, when founders Neil Palmer and Lance Pigott started their business with the help of the Enterprise Allowance Scheme. The scheme gave budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to receive £40 a week (the equivalent of state benefit at the time) for a year, to get fledgling businesses up and running. The business has never looked back, and has grown steadily (and organically) by sourcing, importing and distributing the very best organic wines, beers, ciders and spirits from around the world. With over 50 years’ experience between them, Lance, Neil, Steve and Ewan are available to offer advice — as wine bores go, they’re very approachable!

Vintage Roots is now known in the UK as ‘the organic wine specialists’. But what does organic actually mean? The company buys exclusively from producers who have paid for and achieved ‘organic’ or ‘biodynamic’ certification, which guarantees that no chemical fertilizers, synthetic pesticides or herbicides have been used on the vines. With wines from organically certified estates, there is no risk of residues of synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or fungicides, and they are guaranteed GM free.

Research shows that organic wines have higher levels of polyphenols (a type of antioxidant), which have a positive effect on heart health and are thought to help ward off some cancers.
